As expected, Quantum of Solace had a huge $67M
weekend. Rachel Getting Married continues to climb in the
weekly ranking, though not always in revenue; it's easiest to see its
progress on the log
view. The Dark Knight squeaked back in to the top 25 with $500,000.

This weekend marks a start to the November-December movie
season. Madagascar 2 took in a whopping $63M, and next
weekend's Quantum of Solace should be pretty big as well.

A weak weekend with little note. Rachel Getting Married has
climbed in the ranks for four straight weeks, though its revenue
peaked last week.

fell out of the top 25 after 14 weeks.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua stayed another week at #1, and the
big-budget, Russel Crowe- and Leonardo DiCaprio-starring, Ridley
Scott-directed thriller Body of Lies couldn't even beat the
not-screened-for-critics horror movie Quarantine for second
place. Weird.

Nothing too interesting this week. Get Smart has
inexplicably climbed back into the top 25, barely.

The mid-September weekend was stronger than expected. Despite awful
reviews, Righteous Kill and The Women opened with over
$10 million each. The Family That Preys wasn't screened for
critics but still managed to take #2 with $17 million. But Burn
After Reading came in with almost $20 million, the best opening
for a Coen brothers film ever.

The 2008 movie charts have been updated with data for for
8 September 2008 (box office actuals).

The weakest weekend of <s>the year so far</s> the last the last seven years. Only Bangok
Dangerous debuted in the top 25, barely squeaking past Tropic
Thunder to take the top
spot. The Tomatometer
was unkind.

I'm a little curious about the strategy for next weekend. It looks
to me like most studios are just throwing out crap and seeing what
sticks (e.g. Righteous Kill, The Women). But what about
the new Coen Bros movie, Burn After Reading? Is it trying not
to get buried by summer blockbusters? Are the expectations low? I
can't tell.
